Last Monday afternoon a number of staff were able to attend a workshop, led by Shona Bass, focusing on identifying signs and developing skills to help students who may be dealing with anxiety - both in their school and home life. I found this to be a very practical and worthwhile session and trust that parents who were able to attend the evening session found it to be similarly worthwhile. My thanks to DCEO for the continued support of parent engagement and the provision of such workshops for staff and parents.

A reminder that this month’s P&F meeting will be held this afternoon, commencing at 5.30pm, so as to enable parents who may be otherwise unavailable, to attend. We hope to see you there.

Don’t forget ….

Wed 8/6 - P&F Meeting @ 5.30pm;
Wed 15/6 - School Board Meeting;
Thu 16/6 - Rockhampton Show Holiday.

Have a great week!

Alan

APRE REFLECTION

A Primary Students Prayer for the Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus,
you have shown us how to be merciful like our heavenly Father.
In this year of Mercy,
teach us:
to show mercy in the same way you did,
to be kind, caring and forgiving as you were,
to love as you loved.
Help us:
to forgive those who offend or hurt us,
to seek forgiveness for our wrong doings,
and to say sorry when we need to.
Send your Spirit to bless us to be people of love and action.
We ask this through Mary, the Mother of Mercy.
Amen.

Have a great week.

Regards,

Bernard Fitzgerald

HASS

The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has brought with it many changes to the subjects taught at school. One of these recent changes is to do with the subjects of History and Geography. Previously these have been stand-alone subjects. They are still separate subjects however they have been joined with the new subjects of Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6) in a combined Learning Area called Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). On this semester’s report card you will see the learning area of HASS which will consist of a combined mark for History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6).

LITERACY CORNER

Reading

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Blend Sounds; Stretch and Reread
Children should be taking the individual sounds of letters and blending them together to read a word accurately. Beginning readers often learn their sounds in isolation. The leap from knowing letter sounds to reading words can be daunting. Taking the isolated sounds and blending them together can be a first step to becoming a reader for many children. As they are blending the sounds together encourage them to listen for a word they might have heard before. This will help them work out the word they are stuck on.

Spelling

Strategy: Scrabble
Use Scrabble tiles to spell out your spelling words. For a little extra maths practice figure out the value of each of your words.

Deanne Senini

CLASSROOM NEWS

Prep W

Well, we have almost completed our first half of prep and what a start to the year it has been. Term 2 has seen many exciting times including our very first prayer assembly, celebrating mother’s day and most of all under 8’s day.

Our very first prayer assembly was very exciting, we celebrated Mother’s Day. We spoke about why our mum’s are special and thanked them for everything they do for us. We then got to share a special morning tea with all of our mum’s. We had lots of craft and activities that we could enjoy with them.

Under 8’s day has been one of our highlights of the year so far. We really enjoyed being able to make lots of different things. We even had an ambulance visit us where we they showed us how they take care of their patients. One of our favourite parts of the day was the disco. We had so much fun being able to dance and play lots of games.

This term in class we have been working hard on our reading and writing skills. We have been reading lots of big books and discussing the structure of a sentence. We have then been very clever and began writing our very own sentences. We love writing in Prep W and even find ourselves practicing our writing in our spare time.

In term 1 we learnt about living and nonliving things in Science and this term we were lucky enough to have Mrs Brook come in and help us plant some seeds in our Prep Garden. Here we planted lots of different seeds including carrots, peas, beans, zucchini’s and even sweet potatoes. We really enjoyed being able to plant our very own seed and watch it grow.

This week is our very first sports carnival and we are very excited to show everyone our ball games and novelty races that we have been practicing at school.

We can’t wait to see what we can learn about next term!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations to the following students and staff who will celebrate their birthday this week. They are: Bryce Wogand (5C), Talei Bolaqace (PM), Jordan Semple (5T) Quinn Rooney (PM) and Mrs Brosnan.

Have a great day.

These sessions only take about five minutes and are available after assembly on a Monday morning with Deanne Senini, or with Ray Carrington on Thursday afternoons from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Tracy Wren will also be conducting induction sessions in the tuckshop, if you are helping out in there.

Thanks,
Ray Carrington
