FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Yesterday was the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, Patroness of Australia, and so marked our parish feast day. This Friday we will be joining the parishioners for a whole school Mass to commemorate the feast. Mass will begin at 9.00am in our church and everyone is welcome to join us.

On a similar note, I would like to thank all of the families who were able to attend our recent children’s mass on Saturday evening. I realise it was a busy day for many families with various commitments, but I thank you all for making this your weekend mass of choice.

This Thursday, 26th May will we be celebrating our school Under 8s Day, involving all of our students from Prep to Year 3, along with the Kindergarten children. I know many people have put in a lot of work in preparation for the day and it promises to be a great experience. As part of the day, the P&F have very kindly offered to supply a sausage sizzle and ice block for every student P-6, though the tuckshop will still be open as usual on a Thursday.

A quick reminder once again that we will be closing our enrolments for Prep 2017 at the end of this term, so if you haven’t already lodged your application I would encourage you to do so. Similarly, if you have any friends who are thinking of applying to St. Joseph’s please remind them of the closing date.

This afternoon from 3.30-6.30pm the staff will be involved in a professional development session focussing on Religious Education and resourcing and so may be a little difficult to catch for a chat this afternoon.

Don’t forget ….

* Thu 26/6 - Under 8s Day;
* Fri 27/6 - Our Lady Help of Christians Mass @ 9.00am

Have a great week!

Alan

APRE REFLECTION

This Friday we will be holding a 9:00am shared mass in OLHC church to celebrate Our Lady Help of Christian’s feast day. During the mass we will acknowledge the important role that Mary played in the life of Jesus and reflect on the special bond between Mother Mary, and her son Jesus. We also acknowledge the care and compassion shown by Mary as a patron saint and how she is a great example of how we can be ‘Good Shepherds’ to those around us in this the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Prayer for Our Lady Help of Christians

Almighty God, deepen in our hearts
our love of Mary Help of Christians.
Through her prayers and under her protection,
may the light of Christ shine over our land.
May Australia be granted harmony, justice and peace.
Grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens.
Bless especially the men and women
of the Australian Defence Force and their families.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Mary Help of Christians, pray for us.

All are welcome to attend on Friday.

Have a great week.

Regards,

Bernard Fitzgerald

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Sacraments – Q & A Session

We have the 'Q & A' element of our programme in the near future. Families in the past have found it 'educational'.

This involves about a 40 minute session after Mass of learning more about the sacred space, vessels and vestments.

There are only two sessions so please choose the one that suits your family.

This Saturday - 28 May - 6:00pm - OLHC OR Sunday - 05 June - 9:00am - Holy Family.

For families who missed the Liturgy of the Word element, the third (and final) one will take place this Sunday - 29 May - 9:00am at Holy Family.

Thank you for your dedication to preparing your child for the Sacraments. As St Paul so wisely said:

"Perseverance brings hope and this hope is not deceptive, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us." Romans 5:5

Shalom,
Beryl.

Children’s Mass

Well done to our readers and all the other students who came along and participated in our Holy Trinity Children’s Mass last Saturday evening.

It was great for some of our students to meet Fr. Jayanthi and see our school and parish communities sharing Eucharist with each other both during and after mass. It was a wonderful celebration to be a part of.

HASS

The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has brought with it many changes to the subjects taught at school. One of these recent changes is to do with the subjects of History and Geography. Previously these have been stand-alone subjects. They are still separate subjects, however, they have been joined with the new subjects of Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6) in a combined Learning Area called Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). On this semester’s report card you will see the learning area of HASS which will consist of a combined mark for History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6).

LITERACY CORNER

Reading

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of fluency.

Strategy: Reread Text

To try to increase a child’s fluency they can reread a selection of text several times until they can read it smoothly, accurately and with expression. Rereading also assists a student when they are having trouble understanding a passage.

Spelling

Strategy: Pyramid Words

This activity involves writing spelling words in a pyramid shape. Start with the first letter. On the next line write the first two letters. On the next line write the first three letters. Continue until you have written the entire word.

Example:

T
TH
THE
