FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I would like to thank the school leadership team for taking on extra responsibilities, in terms of school management, during my recent long service leave. Particular thanks to Bernard Fitzgerald for accepting the role of Acting Principal during this period and for the great work done by both he and Deanne during the last three weeks.

This Saturday we have the next of our Children’s Masses for the term. As usual, Mass will commence at 6.00pm in the Church and we would love to see you there. At present we have a number of our students in preparation to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist and the celebration of the Mass together is a wonderful way we can also show our support as a catholic community.

Across recent years we have seen a considerable increase in the number of children in schools, both primary and secondary, who are dealing with some form of anxiety and/or depression. For many children, when left unchecked or unsupported, this can become quite debilitating and as adults we can often struggle to detect some of the early warning signs in children. In order to support teachers and parents in assisting children, the Catholic Education Office in conjunction with Early Life Foundations, are offering a 1.5 hour education session titled ‘Anxiety – Understanding and Strategies to Reduce Anxiety in Children’ on Monday, 6th June at the Kevin Castles Centre (cnr West and Denham St). There will be two sessions, one for staff at 3.30-5.00pm and another for parents from 7.30-9.00pm. If you are able to attend I would strongly encourage you to go. (Please refer to the flyer in the left hand menu)

As we are now at the mid-point of the term, I would remind parents that applications for Prep enrolment for 2017 are due in by the end of this term, Friday 24th June. Children born between July 1st 2011 and June 30th 2012 are eligible for Prep enrolment in 2017. All children must lodge an application for enrolment, regardless of whether they already have a sibling at the school or not. If you know of someone who is interested in enrolment and has not yet lodged an application, please encourage them to drop into the office and ask for an enrolment pack. Interviews will be held early in term three.

Don’t Forget …

  • Wed 18/5 - School Board Meeting;
  • Sat 21/5 - Children’s Mass;
  • Tue 24/5 - Our Lady Help of Christians Feast Day (Parish Feast Day);
  • Fri 27/5 - Whole School Mass to celebrate Parish Feast Day @ 9.00am;

Have a great week!

Alan

APRE REFLECTION

Prayer for Pentecost

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your spirit and they shall be created.
And you shall renew the face of the earth.
O’God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
Did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
grant that by the same Holy Spirit
we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
through Christ Our Lord,
Amen.

Have a great week.

RELIGIOUS MATTERS

Term 2 Children’s Mass

This Saturday evening, May the 21st we will be celebrating our next Children’s Mass for the Term. Mass will be held in Our Lady Help of Christians Church beginning at 6:00pm. Those attending are asked to bring along a plate of food for a shared supper and a ‘cuppa’ afterwards.

Hope to see you there.

Thank You to Eagle Boys for Class Awards

Eagle Boys on Musgrave Street have been generous enough to present us with some vouchers thanks to our purchase of pizzas for Friday tuck-shop.

These vouchers were given to a student from each class who had exhibited exceptional behaviour in and around the classroom over the last few weeks.

The included images show the students who received their pizza vouchers last Friday.

Well done to those students and again, thank-you to Eagle Boys Rockhampton for their generous donation.

NRL Development Cup 2016

Congratulations to our Development Cup rugby league team who took part in the inaugural Jake Granville Cup Gala Day last Friday. After defeating The Rockhampton Grammar School 16-0 early in the day, the team faced their biggest test against Frenchville State School. Joey’s were narrowly defeated by the eventual champions in a very hard fought game 16-12. To make the final, Joey’s had to win their last game against St. Anthony’s which they did in a convincing 28-0 victory.

The final was again a fantastic contest against Frenchville in which Joey’s were defeated 10-4. All of the Joey’s players showed great pride in representing their school and fantastic sports-person ship in both victory and defeat.

I was extremely proud of all the players for their efforts playing against schools with far greater populations than ours at St. Joseph’s PA.

Thanks to all the parents and family members who came to support the team on the day.

Regards

Bernard Fitzgerald

NAPLAN

Congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 students who participated in NAPLAN last week. There was a real calmness around the school and everyone appeared eager to do their best work during these assessments. A special thank you to Nicole Anderson, Kerrie Tennyson, Ray Carrington, Erin Tranberg and Amanda White who prepared the students for the tests and administered the tests to the students. A high level of professionalism was shown and the fact that the students were so calm is a real testament to the way the teachers have spoken about NAPLAN and prepared the students for the assessments. We now look forward to receiving the results.

HASS

The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has brought with it many changes to the subjects taught at school. One of these recent changes is to do with the subjects of History and Geography. Previously these have been stand-alone subjects. They are still separate subjects however they have been joined with the new subjects of Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6) in a combined Learning Area called Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). On this semester’s report card you will see the learning area of HASS which will consist of a combined mark for History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship (years 3-6) and Economics and Business (years 5 and 6).

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of accuracy.

Strategy – Use beginning and ending sounds

When reading a word, students should be using the sounds at the beginning of the word as well as at the end of the word. Often children will look at the beginning letter or letters and guess a word that may fit in the sentence without looking at the rest of the word. They may not even know there is an end to a word. It is important that children slow down enough to be able to look at the whole word before making a guess. They would then cross check the word to make sure it makes sense with the pictures and the rest of the sentence.

Spelling:

Strategy: Match Up

This strategy involves writing each of the spelling words on two different index cards. Turn all the cards face down and mix them up. Lay out all the cards in rows (like Concentration or Memory) and flip over two cards at a time. Read each card aloud to see if they match. Keep them if they do or flip them over and try again.
