FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As a community that is an important member of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Rockhampton, I have been asked to distribute the following information to the wider community in regards to the upcoming Federal Election and how it will influence the funding directed towards Catholic Schools in the immediate future.

As you are aware education is front and centre for this election campaign and it will be important that we assist with the promotion of Catholic Education’s perspectives during the election campaign.

I strongly encourage you to read the supplied document to get a greater understanding of the implications that this election will have on Catholic Schools in the future. More information will be posted each week as it comes to hand.

NAPLAN

This week will see year 3 and 5 students compete in NAPLAN tests. These tests are national tests covering a variety of literacy and numeracy topics. Teachers have been preparing students by exposing them to practice tests as well as discussing strategies to attack the various types of questions used in NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN is not meant to cause anxiety for students so I encourage you to talk to your child about NAPLAN in a way which will put them at ease. I also encourage you to limit the amount of stress for your child during this week by encouraging them to have a good night sleep, eat a good hearty breakfast, and arrive at school on time. The tests will start at 9am sharp and students are not allowed to enter the room after this time. I thank you for your cooperation with these issues.

UNDER 8s MORNING – SAVE THE DATE

St Joseph’s annual under 8s morning will be Thursday 26th May. This year it will take on a slightly different format than it has done in the past. The day will begin at 8:40 with a short liturgy led by 3T in the MPA. The students will then rotate freely through various activities until first break. We are hoping to have some sort of performance for the whole group to watch in the middle session. The final session of the day will be in classrooms as per normal. More information about the day will be sent home as the date draws closer however if you would like to offer your assistance for that morning session please let your class teacher or myself know.

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

The teaching of the units associated with the Daniel Morcombe child safety curriculum has now come to an end. This week I will be finalising the assessment of the units and we will move on to new Health content in week 5.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week’s skill comes under the heading of comprehension.

Strategy – Retell the Story

A story retelling usually includes characters, setting, problems and solution or the main ideas of the text. It involves telling what is important in the story without telling too much. Retelling helps readers recall what is happening in the story, develop a sense of story structure and become more accurate in monitoring their understanding. They can transfer this knowledge of story structure to their own story writing.

Spelling:

Strategy: Letter Writing

Write a friendly letter to a teacher or a friend using at least 10 of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words that you use. This activity is useful as it allows the student to use their spelling words in context. It will allow them to think about the meaning of their words.

CLASSROOM NEWS

2F

We have had a busy start to the term rehearsing and delivering our first Prayer Assembly, a reflection on our learning’s about Holy Week. In Geography we are looking at our location within Australia and learning about all the states and capital cities and the places we have visited on family holidays.

In Math we are learning about addition and starting to use our problem solving skills to solve math problems. Our writing this term focuses on the Seven Steps to Writing success. Currently we have been writing sizzling starts and are starting to look at tightening the tension within our stories.

Some of our writing.

Bang!! There was a strange noise. It was coming from the roof. It was getting closer. I was afraid. – Adelaide

It looked at me and it growled. It didn’t like me. It was staring at me through the bars of the cage. – Sam

Howling wolves were chasing after me when I found myself in a maze. The exit was there right in front of me. I didn’t think I should go there but I did. Just as I touched the exit I fell. When will I reach the bottom? – Chace

All of a sudden I saw a fish in my bedroom. It was very curious. I opened my bedroom door and I saw a reef in the hallway. I wondered what was happening. – Isabelle

All of a sudden I woke up in the middle of the ocean on my bed. How did I get here? – Dominic

The sound was deafening. Bang! Crack! I jumped into my bed with a torch and pulled the covers over me. What was that strange noise outside my window? – Angelina

Wow how did I get here! I hope I am not trapped here for the rest of my life. The girl was worried. She looked for a torch until it was night-time but she did not find one. – Rayna

We hope all Mother’s enjoyed a happy mother’s day over the weekend.

P & F NEWS

I hope everyone recovered from their lovely double long weekend whammy. This Monday was exceptionally hard to get back into the swing of things!

Firstly this week I would like to please ask for assistance to help at the Under 8's Day Thursday the 26th May. The P and F supply a sausage sizzle for the children. Assistance in prepping, serving and cleaning up after lunch would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to Mrs Senini and all the staff for their preparation of the day which is always enjoyed by the children and parents too!

I would like to take a moment also to thank the tireless efforts of the ladies that give up their time to help Tracy Wren in the tuckshop. Some people only have a couple of hours to spare in their day and they offer their services. The tuckshop cannot be run by Tracy alone. If you can spare a couple of hours in the morning. Please pop in and see Tracy at the tuckshop. Even if you can make it once a month, the help will be so much appreciated.

Breakfast Club will also be very appreciative of some extra sets of hands in the morning. Only 20- 30 mins of your time is needed in the morning.

These services need your help in running them successfully and filling our kids bellies up ready for their day of learning.

Have a great week!

Amanda Ryan
