APRE REFLECTION

ANZAC DAY 2016

'Greater love has no one than this:
to lay down one's life for one's friends.'

John 15:13

THE ODE

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."

LEST WE FORGET.

It was wonderful to see so over 170 staff and students from the Joey's community attend Monday's ANZAC March. Joey's had over 170 marching with the school and numerous others marching with other community groups. It was also fantastic to see so many of our parents and grandparents also supporting us along the way. A fantastic community, remembering the sacrifice of others on this very special day.

On a side note, all the best to our Principal Mr. Alan Barker who will be taking some well-deserved long service leave over the next few weeks.

Have a great week.

UNDER 8s MORNING – SAVE THE DATE

St Joseph's annual under 8s morning will be Thursday 26th May. This year it will take on a slightly different format than it has done in the past. The day will begin at 8:40 with a short liturgy led by 3T in the MPA. The students will then rotate freely through various activities until first break. We are hoping to have some sort of performance for the whole group to watch in the middle session. The final session of the day will be in classrooms as per normal. More information about the day will be sent home as the date draws closer however if you would like to offer your assistance for that morning session please let your class teacher or myself know.

DANIEL MORCOMBE CHILD SAFETY CURRICULUM

Week 3

Prep – Year 2

Students will:

  • understand that personal information (and the forms it can take) should not be given out online without the permission of a parent or teacher
  • understand how revealing some information online can lead to them being identified
  • understand why they obtain permission from an adult before participating in an online environment
  • understand that they should seek help if they encounter anything worrying or feel unsafe online.

Years 3 – 6

Students will:

  • Identify that planning ahead can help them stay safe
  • Plan avoidance or exit strategies that can be used to keep themselves safe

Dear Parents,

Rockhampton Police are currently investigating an incident which occurred at a Rockhampton school late last week. It was reported that a person approached a student offering them a lift home.

The school will be reminding students of the importance of protective behaviours to ensure their safety, focusing on the key safety messages of Recognise, React and Report.

It is requested that parents also remind their children of these important safety messages at home.

LITERACY CORNER

Reading:

Learning to read involves children learning skills in comprehension, fluency, accuracy and expanding on their known vocabulary. This week's skill comes under the heading of Fluency.

Strategy – Voracious Reading

Readers become more fluent by increasing the amount of reading they do. The more a child reads the better they will become at reading. Encourage your child to read as often as possible. Please make sure though they are reading good fit books (books which are not too easy or difficult for them).

Spelling:

Strategy: Highlight Words

Write your words. Read each one and highlight any chunk which may be difficult for you. This strategy is important as it allows students to deconstruct words and think about the sections they find difficult and need to focus more attention on.

CLASSROOM NEWS

YR 5

What's Happening in Year 5 this Term

Year 5 is very busily beginning our new units. The students are learning about the History of Rockhampton and researching heritage listed buildings around town. We are looking forward to writing a letter to council proposing that Rockhampton has a theme park and where it should go. Then the fun part will be designing and building a model of our proposed theme parks.

In Religion we have created beautiful prayer journals and are doing quite a bit of personal reflection and strengthening prayer understanding. Our focus of inquiry is based around the following questions. How is prayer a part of my life? How is prayer a part of people's lives? Am l able to use different forms of meditation in my prayer life?

In science we are learning about how plants and animals thrive in the extreme temperatures and dryness of a desert environment. We will be researching and conducting experiments to help us understand the special features such plants and animals have and use to do this.

The students are looking at Graffiti in Media Arts this term. The following questions are the basis for our inquiry. How do artists convey meaning through their artwork? What are the different reasons people do street art? How can l express an opinion in my artwork? As the term progresses the students will create a digital folio of different graffiti artists and will design their own piece of graffiti street art to be displayed in a class exhibition. More information will be sent home about this later in the term.

If at any time you wish to catch up with either of us, please do not hesitate to let us know.
